The work performed by the Cellular & Molecular Therapy (CMT) Laboratories in NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), is central to the provision and improvement of life saving stem cell transplants. Our laboratories support over half of all haemopoietic stem cell transplants performed in England each year through a network of GMP grade laboratories in 7 specialist facilities across the country. Working with academic partners in Centres of Excellence, we aim to be at the forefront of clinical improvements related to these transplants and to use our expertise in GMP, quality and regulatory matters to promote other areas of research. NHS Blood and Transplant also supplies blood and blood components, and manages 5,500 organ and corneal transplants every year.

We are looking to recruit to a band 5 registered BMS role for someone who will then undergo training to move to a band 6 role or a band 6 role for someone who has already completed the necessary training for this role after registration.

The department works with peripheral blood derived stem cells, umbilical cord blood and bone marrow cells, collected for patients undergoing stem cell transplantation. You will be highly motivated, ‘team focussed’ and with good time management skills. The work will involve QC testing, specialist cell processing, and other development activities. We would expect you to be flexible and willing to adapt to change. Experience of working in a cell therapy laboratory, and familiarity with stem cell processing and/or flow cytometry techniques would be an advantage, although training would be provided for the right candidate.

We currently operate from 2 sites in Leeds and Sheffield but are building a new facility near Barnsley (Unit D, Capitol Way, Dodworth, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, S75 3FG). You will therefore work initially in Leeds or Sheffield Blood Centre, before moving to the new site in Barnsley (date mid-November - tbc). Initially, working hours while undergoing training will be between 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday (37.5 hours per week). The working hours in Barnsley will change with a shift rotation 7.5 hours a day between 07:30am and 7:30 pm or only 11.30am to 7.30pm, (times to be discussed at interview). You will also be required to participate in the departments on call rota, following appropriate training.

You should be a HCPC registered Biomedical or Clinical Scientist with relevant experience qualification in the field of transplantation science. Biomedical Scientists from other pathology disciplines wishing to develop specialist skills in Cellular and Molecular Therapies will also be eligible for the post, paid as a BMS on an NHS Band 5 scale whilst achieving the necessary experience and qualifications to move to a band 6.

In return you’ll benefit from an excellent pension and the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, using modern equipment and practices, where you can develop your specialist skills and scientific education.
