An opportunity has arisen within the Haematology and blood transfusion team for an experienced, Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered, Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the multidisciplinary laboratory based in the Lorn and Islands Hospital in Oban. Candidates will be enthusiastic, outgoing, motivated and innovative, with good organisational skills and well developed communication skills.

Band 6 - If you have a degree or equivalent in Biomedical Sciences, are HCPC registered and have an IBMS Specialist Diploma in Haematology , or equivalent experience, we want to hear from you.

Band 6 (Annex 21) – Consideration will be given to applicants who are HCPC registered but lack relevant laboratory experience equivalent to a Specialist Biomedical Scientist - and are willing to undertake the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology. These candidates, if successful, will be required to complete their Specialist Portfolio in post, with support from the teams in Oban and Raigmore, prior to progression to Band 6. During the period of training, Annex 21 will be applied to the post, in that the successful candidate will be paid a percentage of the fully qualified rate as follows: Year 1: 65% of the pay band maximum; Year 2: 70% of the pay band maximum, Year 3: 75% of the pay band maximum.

Oban is a busy west coast town surrounded by scenic countryside but only two hours from Glasgow.  It has good rail and road links to the major cities and is also the centre for many island ferries. The laboratory is working towards UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation. You will support the Lead Biomedical Scientist in Haematology and blood transfusion in the updating and formation of procedures and processes; working with the team both in Oban and Raigmore to bring the laboratory in line with UKAS ISO 15189 standards. In addition, following in post training within biochemistry and sample reception you will also be expected to rotate and participate in the on-call out of hours system.
