Job Details

We are currently recruiting for an enthusiastic Principal Biomedical Scientist to help lead our fast paced and dynamic Microbiology team. The Principal Biomedical Scientist will work closely with the Operations Manager to lead the Microbiology services across our two general hospitals (Southend University/Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals). You will be expected to provide expert leadership and knowledge for the scientific and technical advancement of Microbiology Services and to assist the lead consultants in areas of responsibility in the strategic development and delivery of this Clinical Service. 

The main responsibilities of the role are outlined below.

  • To work with Team managers to ensure discipline specific expert knowledge is available as required and operate a fully functioning compliant Microbiology Laboratory service within agreed key performance indicators 
  • To Provide Microbiology management including being “first point of management contact” to the Trust in absence of the Operational manager.
  • Provide professional knowledge, advice and leadership skills to Specialist Biomedical Scientists, Trainees, BMS, pathology support staff and ensure specialist training is delivered to all supporting staff.

Qualifications and experience required:

  • HCPC State Registration as a Biomedical Scientist, with evidence of Continued Professional Development
  • Management Qualification ILM level 3 or have relevant experience
  • Relevant M Level Qualification and IBMS Membership
  • IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma if applicable or an additional MSc/FIBMS qualification in Microbiology
  • A minimum of 4 years’ post specialist experience some of which will preferably be as a Senior BMS in a Microbiology department
  • Good knowledge of computer applications and LIMS including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Statistical Packages
  • Knowledge of National guidelines and protocols relating to specific discipline
  • Knowledge of major incident plan
  • Excellent problem-solving and leadership qualities
