Agenda for Change Pay band 8a

Cellular Pathology, Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust

The Cellular Pathology department provides Histopathology, Cytopathology and Mortuary services housed within a purpose-built facility in a prime city-centre location. The laboratory is one of the largest services in the country and handles around 80,000 requests per annum. We receive a broad range of specimens from within the Trust, General Practitioners and as a specialist referral centre handle cases regionally, nationally and from overseas. We work closely with genomics services, accommodating the increasing complexity of integrated pathology and molecular diagnostics.

The laboratory is divided into a number of sections encompassing Specimen Reception, Slide Production, Immunohistochemistry (IHC), Muscle & Nerve, Electron Microscopy, Neuropathology, Non-gynae Cytology, Mohs and research facility ‘NovoPath’. There is a workforce of 130 laboratory technical and support staff,  5 Advanced Practioners,  45 Consultants, Consultant BMS, and over 20 speciality trainees who work within specialist teams.

Cellular Pathology at NuTH introduced Advanced Practioner (AP) roles for Biomedical Scientists in histological dissection back in 2010 as an early adopter, and have embedded dissection and reporting advanced roles into the department ever since. The AP team share dissection specialities, but as those undertaking reporting Gastrointestinal and dermatopathology progress towards stage D, often reduce their dissection repertoire, therefore we are seeking a further qualified dissection AP to join our team.

Training opportunities are available across all staff grades and we continue to develop in accordance with the professional vision of enhanced roles for Biomedical Scientists who thrive on providing a high quality service in a well-equipped and modern working environment.

We are looking for an experienced dissection Advanced Practioner to support our expanding service needs and welcome applicants with experience of complex specimen handling and have attained the IBMS/RCPath diploma of expert practice in histological dissection.  Applicants must be able to demonstrate extensive specialist knowledge of Cellular Pathology, technical skills and leadership to support staff training, quality and development.
