The successful applicant will work in all sections of the laboratory in rotation and will participate in the training of less experienced staff. They will take a special interest in a specialty area and be expected to take a lead role in helping to develop this aspect of the service, extensive experience in this field is essential. They will be eligible to join the out-of-hours service when they have had sufficient experience with local protocols. The successful applicant will be required to take part in the roster for staffing the laboratory on Saturday mornings and bank holidays.

Maintain a high standard of clinical work when carrying out diagnostic laboratory procedures.

Responsible for the safe and accurate generation of test results including checking and administration.

Become proficient at technical procedures in sub sections of the laboratory including: Parasitology, Mycology, Virology, Serology/Immunology, as well as routine Bacteriology.

As a section supervisor, you will motivate colleagues, champion service user safety and dignity and drive continuous improvement.

Pathology services at Whittington Health are within the London 1 Pathology Network. As part of the transition of pathology services into a hub and spoke model, the pathology services may locate to another site within the network in the future. Job Description

Title: Specialist Biomedical Scientist

Grade: Band 6

Annual Leave: 27days per annum increasing to 29 days after 5 years NHS service and 33 days after 10 years NHS service

Department: Pathology - Microbiology

Responsible to: Departmental Service Manager

Accountable to: Pathology Manager

POST SUMMARY

This post will work in the relevant section of the Pathology Department, processing samples, validating and authorising results (if applicable), to provide a timely high quality service to all users.

The post holder will take responsibility for managing more junior biomedical staff, medical laboratory assistants and any work placement staff in the department.

They will also be expected to assist the senior staff with any aspects of quality, training, health and safety, clinical governance, audit and paperwork for UKAS, MHRA, and HTA, as and when required.

MAIN DUTIES
1. To work in a section within the relevant department processing samples, this may be on a rotational basis.
2. To ensure the work is processed in a timely and appropriate manner and that results are produced within the designated turn around times.
3. If applicable, to validate results on the laboratory computer system, referring results to the medical / clinical staff where appropriate.
4. To ensure all unexpectedly abnormal results are communicated to the requesting clinician, as per the department’s protocol, and that where necessary the clinician is advised of any further tests that may benefit the patient or aid diagnosis.
5. To be responsible for the safe and proper use of automation that they use.

7. To monitor stocks of all laboratory consumables, and inform senior staff when ordering is necessary.
8. To keep adequate and appropriate records of all used reagents within their working area.
9. To teach technical and medical staff, as and when required.
10. To undertake appraisals of staff working within your section, as requested, by the service manager
11. To provide supervision when required.
12. To consult with the senior staff on any technical changes that may benefit the laboratory
13. To work with the senior staff as and when required on the production of standard operating procedures, UKAS, MHRA, HTA, COSHH and risk assessment documentation.
14. To participate, where appropriate, in the department’s extended day and out of hours service provision.
15. To ensure that they and all staff follow relevant policies.
16. To undertake data collection, statistical analysis and export results to the appropriate local and national bodies.
17. To participate in research and audit. To lead on internal audits as and when required.
18. To deputise for the senior BMS staff, as and when required.
19. To assist the senior staff and take responsibility for any quality objectives or KPIs as and when delegated to them.
20. To assist the senior staff in the formal training and mentoring of staff who are undertaking any formal training, for example IBMS portfolios, MLA training programs or other study related to the discipline as and when required to do so.
21. To assist the senior staff and take responsibility for any aspects of UKAS, MHRA, SHOT, HTA, clinical governance and audit as delegated to them.
22. To undertake all mandatory and statutory training requirements associated with the role and any other training required in order to able to carry out daily duties, and comply with the Trust’s training requirements.
23. To participate in personal object setting and review including the creation of a personal development plan to be ratified at the annual appraisal meeting.
24. To participate in continuing professional development (CPD) in line with the requirements of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
