Pathology First delivers full laboratory services for two hospitals covering all pathology disciplines including transfusion, biochemistry, haematology, immunology, microbiology, cellular pathology and phlebotomy.

Biomedical Scientist Team Manager (Proteins) - Blood Sciences

Job Detail Section:

We are seeking an experienced biomedical scientist with an interest in specific proteins to run our proteins section. We are a clinical laboratory conducting 14,500 serum analyses per year by capillary electrophoresis. 

There is also some serum and urine immunotyping and a small number of immunofixations. The practical work is normally performed by associate scientists who rotate through the section, and a biomedical scientist normally interprets and reports results.

The section also includes the measurement of free light chains on a separate platform. The role is located at our dedicated hub laboratory in the Basildon industrial area off the A127.

Briefly describe the main duties of the role

  • Provide leadership and expertise in the analysis of specific proteins 
  • Supervise employees to ensure that test procedures are carried out according to SOPs and that the staff are competent
  • Organise the workflow through the laboratory section making the best possible use of available resources.
  • Liaise with consultants and other clinical biochemistry staff to resolve issues, discuss areas of improvement and implementation of changes
  • Review of SOPs and implementation of new procedures with change control processes. Understand root cause analysis in the investigation of incidents
  • Management of staff including recruitment, training, management of employee performance, absence management, and management of rostering
  • Assist in maintaining appropriate internal & external quality assurance to recognise poor performance and act accordingly

List your Qualifications criteria

Essential criteria

MSc in clinical biochemistry, FIBMS, or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma, or experience in an equivalent role. Applicants who are working HCPC registration as a biomedical scientist.

HCPC registration as a biomedical scientist.

List your Experience criteria

Applicant must have at least 5 years of experience, working within a clinical biochemistry laboratory.

High-level working knowledge of biomedical scientific techniques and practices at postgraduate level.

Expert interpretive and diagnostic skills.

Knowledge of national guidelines and protocols relating to specific discipline.

High degree of accuracy and numeracy.

Able to demonstrate a good knowledge and experience of standard laboratory information management systems and computer applications including MS Office and statistical applications.
