This is an opportunity to join a progressive department situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Scotland. We provide a comprehensive Microbiology service to clinicians throughout the NHS Highland area; specimens for the Scottish Toxoplasma Reference Laboratory and Scottish Lyme Disease and Tick-borne Infection Reference Laboratory also received from other health boards. The department has 3 sections: Culture (bacterial culture, antibiotic sensitivity, antigen detection), Molecular (bacteria and virus [including toxoplasma cell culture]) and Serology (bacterial and viral serology, Parasitology [STRL and SLDTRL] and Immunology tests).
You will join an established team, and although you will be expected to work closely with departmental consultants, clinical scientists, other senior BMS and the department manager, you will have with a considerable degree of autonomy and responsibility for providing professional, scientific and technical leadership, to a team of experienced staff. The post holder will also be responsible for coordinating training of new and existing staff within Microbiology to standards required for IBMS and ISO15189:2012, as well as liaising with external training providers. The post involves, weekend and public holidays as required by the department, and participation in the out-of-hours on-call service (culture section).
Applicants who can demonstrate team spirit, can motivate people, have initiative and flexibility, must be HCPC registered, have professional knowledge and technical expertise of laboratory Microbiology attained either through relevant Masters Degree or IBMS specialist portfolio in Microbiology. You will have practical laboratory experience working at band 6 (specialist BMS), must possess excellent communication skills both oral and written, and be fully computer literate.
