The Immunology Department, St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey (Berkshire Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS)), has a full time Senior Biomedical Scientist (band 7) vacancy.  We have 4 consultant Immunologists and a Specialist Registrar who are actively involved in the provision of the Immunology service which includes autoimmunity, allergy, protein electrophoresis and cellular work. The laboratory hours are 7am – 7pm Monday to Friday and 9am-1pm Saturday. You would be required to work 37.5 hours per week during core hours (9am – 5.30pm) Monday – Friday and be able and willing to cover Saturday mornings if required.  You would work alongside other Senior Biomedical Scientists and in rotation with other staff in all sections of the laboratory as necessary. 

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist to join the senior BMS team within Immunology.  The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge of Immunology, training, Quality Management systems and have good communication and presentation skills.  They need to hold the IBMS specialist portfolio in Immunology or equivalent and have significant experience of working within Immunology.

The laboratory is well equipped with automated ELISA processors (DS2), nephelometers (BNII), Immunocap250 analysers, automated slide processors (Quantalyser 240), the Sebia protein systems (Capillarys and Hydrasys) and a FACSCanto flow cytometer.  Experience with some of these machines would be an advantage.

Knowledge of laboratory based computers, audits, SOPs, ISO standards and quality is essential.  You must also be able to demonstrate current evidence of CPD, contribution to service development, problem solving skills plus the support and development of staff.  Essential qualities we require are an ability to work within a team, good communication skills, good technical proficiency and an ability to work unsupervised.  You must be able to work under pressure and be able to meet deadlines, be flexible and adaptable and show that you are motivated and willing to develop your knowledge and skills.

BSPS is formed by St Peter’s Hospital Chertsey, Royal Surrey County Hospital, Frimley Park Hospital, Wexham Park Hospital and Royal Berkshire Hospital.  It currently provides diagnostic pathology services for these 5 hospitals and the surrounding GPs serving a population of over 2 million people.  Current activity for BSPS is approximately 23 million tests a year with a workforce of 670 staff.  We are a busy diagnostic Immunology department based at St Peter’s Hospital which currently handles approximately 200,000 samples per year including many from referral hospitals.
