It’s all here to discover at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). As the UK’s largest Trust, we offer unparalleled career opportunities, a great work/life balance in one of the country’s most exciting cities – and the chance to do something absolutely unique with your knowledge.

We currently have a career-defining opportunity to lead one of the biggest and most influential Microbiology Laboratories in the UK – and in doing so, make a tangible difference to the lives of thousands of people. Working in partnership with Public Health England, we are the Public Health Laboratory for the North West, handling 620,000 specimens across major clinical specialties such as respiratory medicine, transplantation and paediatrics. Following a major refurbishment in which we introduced a full laboratory automation system ‘WASPLab’, we have access to exceptional equipment and resources. Now, our people are developing their skills in cutting-edge areas including molecular diagnoses – and with you at the helm, there is no saying what they could go on to achieve.

Overseeing the work of a large department (that currently stands at more than 90 staff, with another 40 due to join from our Wythenshawe site), you will ensure we are offering high-quality services to the Trust, plus a wide range of hospitals across the North West and beyond. Taking the day-to-day lead on managing all aspects of laboratory operations, you will take overall responsibility for all health and safety operational matters. Willing to roll your sleeves up and get directly involved in providing biomedical scientific services, you will lead by example as you support clinical diagnoses. From motivating staff to maintaining the department’s finances, this is a multi-layered role that will include initiating research projects and clinical trials, and challenging a highly-skilled team to push the boundaries of what they are capable of.

This is a huge opportunity to manage a large-scale operation. As microbiology evolves, we are committed to bringing the brightest minds together to deliver life-enhancing results. And while you will be central to this exciting work, you won’t be on your own. Enjoying the comprehensive support of three deputies, plus Health and Safety, Quality and IT specialists, you will find that this is a team effort. To be equal to this role, you will therefore be a visionary leader with excellent communication skills and a management qualification, or evidence of having developed management skills. HCPC registered, you will have significant medical Microbiology experience, with a good awareness of current issues in the pathology service, health and safety legislation and UKAS standards.

For further details/informal visits contact Rachel Jones, PHE Regional Head of Laboratory Operations on 0161 276 5747 or David Brayshaw, Director of Laboratory Medicine, MFT on 0161 701 6230.

Closing date: 27 June 2019.
